A Lot Of People Fought For This Country. Let’s Thank Them Today.
This month, we celebrate Veterans Day. America is a country that owes its very existence to the brave men and women who have served in the military. However, many of us don't know what it was like for those soldiers to fight on behalf of our country. In fact, most Americans don't know how many veterans live in their neighborhoods or what they do daily. Today is a day to show our gratitude for all these brave men and women who fought alongside us during past wars and today's servicemen who continue to defend freedom around the world at significant personal risk.
Here are some simple ways you can thank a veteran:
Several organizations help veterans and their families in need. Donating money or time can be a great way to honor their service, especially if you're not close enough to give them a call or share a meal with them this Memorial Day weekend. Here are some trusted veteran organizations:
The Wounded Warrior Project works to honor and empower our nation’s wounded warriors by raising awareness, helping them readjust to civilian life, and providing critical care programs so they can live independently when possible. The organization also provides educational training for veterans, families, and caregivers who want to learn how best to serve their loved ones after combat injuries or illnesses have changed their lives forever.
Fisher House Foundation offers housing for military families near major medical centers where veterans receive treatment from Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals across the country, as well as scholarships for spouses of military personnel who need assistance paying for housing. In contrast, their spouse receives VA health care services at one of these facilities across America.
United Service Organizations (USO). The USO provides comfort items such as toiletries, snacks, and books; entertainment such as movies; magazines; games, etcetera through its Care Packages Program, which ships almost 1 million packages annually!
If you don't know any veterans, send your card to the local VA hospital or nursing home and let them distribute it. If you know a veteran, call them and thank them for their service, or send an email with your thanks—and don't forget to include those currently serving.
Veterans Day is a day to honor all veterans who have served in the military. It was initially known as Armistice Day and was celebrated on November 11th to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill that changed it from Armistice Day to Veterans Day so that we could commemorate all veterans who had served in any war or conflict since World War I.
Use this opportunity to learn about some of your family members and friends who fought for this country during World War II, Vietnam, and even more recent conflicts. If you know someone who has been injured or killed while serving in the military, take time today to remember them by visiting their grave site or sending them flowers at their home address (if they are still living).
There are many ways to thank veterans for their service beyond just thanking them. Small business owners can do their part as well by offering discounts and specials for current and past service members.
